Stem cells are undifferentiated biological cells that can differentiate into specialized cells and divide via mitosis. In mammals, two broad types exist: embryonic stem cells (from blastocysts) and adult stem cells (found in various tissues).
In adult organisms, stem cells serve as a repair system, replenishing tissues. In a developing embryo, they can differentiate into ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm while also maintaining turnover of regenerative organs such as blood, skin, and intestinal tissues.
